It Takes Courage to Change Careers

The first National Women’s Day was celebrated in 1909. The day was set aside to honor women who protested against working conditions. A year later it was decided Women’s Day should be a world-wide celebration. Since then there has been an International Women’s Day (IWD) every year. Today we celebrate IWD on March 8th.

Though we need to be celebrating women every day of the year, we wanted to take the time today to showcase five organizations and initiatives that are helping women in all parts of the world.

We encourage everybody – regardless of your gender, to celebrate this year’s IWD by reading about the different organizations working to improve women’s lives.

1 – Center For Reproductive Rights

This group believes strongly that every person should be able to participate as an equal member of society regardless of gender. And they believe that women should have the freedom to decide whether or when they have children and/or get married.

2- Women for Women International

This organization supports the most marginalized women in countries affected by conflict and war by creating classes of twenty-five women that can support, network, share experiences, learn critical skills, and access new resources together.

3- Friendship Bridge

While poverty and illiteracy are widespread in Guatemala, this group of women are determined to create a change. They are doing that by creating more opportunities for education and access to healthcare tools for women in the country.

4- Dress For Success

This international not-for-profit organization empowers women by providing them with a network of support, professional attire, and the development tools need to help women thrive in work and life.

5- Goals for Girls

Since 2007 this organization has used soccer to help disadvantaged girls across the globe. Through the game of soccer, these girls are learning life skills on how to be agents of change, which helps them develop the skills that they need to become leaders within their communities.

Happy International Women’s Day!
