5 Documentaries Supporting Work to #ChangeTheRatio In Tech And Entrepreneurship

The 2012 Black Girls Code film and web series are incredibly inspiring to watch! Any time women and diverse individuals are featured in tech roles in the media is worth celebrating. Since the industry has lacked gender diversity for so long, it is important to recognize the slow but sure change.  Recently, more movies and documentaries about girls (and women) who code are being produced and distributed, and we want to share our favorites with you! Here are the top 5 films this year that are sure to inspire even more girls, women, and gender diverse individuals, and their allies to become tech engineers and entrepreneurs:

CodeGirl Documentary

CodeGirl Documentary

A film by Lesley Chilcott (producer of An Inconvenient Truth and Waiting for Superman), the CodeGirl documentary aims to inspire more girls to pursue their interests in STEM and entrepreneurship. The film follows teams of high school age girls globally during the 2015 season. Every year, Technovation challenges girls all over the world to build a mobile app that will address a community problem. Since 2010, nearly 5,000 girls from 60 countries have submitted a mobile app to Technovation, as they “try to better their community through technology and collaboration.” This film shows the world that young women can make a difference in the app industry. Follow the film at @CodeGirlMovie and the program at @Technovation, and watch the CodeGirl trailer here.

Follow her on Twitter at @gulnara and the show at @the_developers_.

CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap

CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap

CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap exposes the dearth of American female and minority software engineers and explores the reasons for this gender gap. Directed by Robin Hauser Reynolds, the film raises the question: what would society gain from having more women and minorities code? Follow the film at @codefilm.

Go Against The Flow

Go Against The Flow

Go Against The Flow is a documentary about successful female entrepreneurs from the US and UK, sharing their hard-learned lessons from starting companies like Cloudflare, Getaround, Kabam, Zinepak, Mightybell and many more! It can be hard to go against the flow of society, but this documentary shows that it is possible, and worth it! Help fund the Kickstarter for this documentary. Follow the filmmaker at @charu1603.

These are only 5 of the many movies and videos about underrepresented individuals making the leap and succeeding in tech. It’s important that these films get out into the world to showcase the need for diversity in the tech industry.

This list was compiled by Angie Chang at Hackbright Academy.
