Changing The Stem Industry TGIF

TGIF! This week was about disruption – changing the STEM industry, creating new toys to introduce the next generation to programming, and making an impact on the start-up tech scene.

Check back at the end of each week for our Friday finds.

Here’s what we’re reading – July 27

  • Read: Rewiring STEM education by Ali Sundermier for symmetry. The idea that science skills are innate and great discoveries are made only by “lone geniuses” is losing traction in STEM.
  • Read: Harry Potter Coding Kit Uses a Magic Wand to Teach Muggle Kids to Code by Bloomberg for Fortune. The new coding kit developed by Kano toys includes a physical magic wand that responds to movement in the hand, and relies on programming languages like JavaScript to introduce kids to computing, code, and machine learning.
  • Read: Meet the VC team changing the start-up landscape by Eva Short for SiliconRepublic. The start-up scene, unquestionably, has a diversity problem. This is something that VC founder Arlan Hamilton and her team at Backstage Capital intend to correct.
